Colin Low

I met Colin many years ago at the Singapore Institute of Directors (SID) annual conference. We stayed connected, and he shared his career story with me when I was conducting interviews for my book. He also helped me to understand how Independent Directors support companies to achieve good governance and expand the business.

You can connect with him on LinkedIn.

Colin's Story

Colin Low’s career reflects a long arc of leadership inside complex global organizations, followed by a deliberate transition into board-level stewardship. His professional journey spans public-sector policy, multinational corporate leadership, and more than a decade of board work across listed companies, private enterprises, and public institutions.

Educated in the United States, Colin completed undergraduate degrees in Marketing and Management, followed by an MBA during a period of economic uncertainty. His business education shaped a systems-level way of thinking—understanding how strategy, finance, operations, and governance interact rather than viewing organizations through functional silos.

Early in his career, Colin joined the Illinois Bureau of the Budget, working closely with the Governor’s office. The role exposed him to high-stakes public-sector decision-making, where financial analysis directly influenced policy outcomes. Evaluating issues ranging from public safety to incarceration costs sharpened his judgment and instilled a deep respect for accountability, trade-offs, and governance—foundations that would later serve him well at board level.

In the late 1980s, Colin returned to Singapore and joined ST Aerospace, shortly after its public listing. His responsibilities expanded from market development into corporate strategy, joint ventures, and mergers and acquisitions. By the early 1990s, he relocated to the United States as Head of North America, managing commercial, legal, and manufacturing relationships with global partners. These roles placed him at the intersection of Asia and the U.S., providing firsthand exposure to cross-border governance, industrial operations, and stakeholder management.

In 1999, Colin joined General Electric (GE)—a defining chapter in his corporate career. Entering at a regional leadership level, he held roles spanning aircraft engines and services, working directly with airline CEOs, regulators, and senior internal stakeholders. Without a formal engineering background, he invested heavily in learning from technical experts, building credibility through preparation, curiosity, and disciplined thinking.

Over more than a decade at GE, Colin took on increasingly senior leadership responsibilities across aviation, healthcare, energy, finance, and infrastructure—culminating in his role as President & CEO for GE in Southeast Asia. In this capacity, he oversaw a diverse portfolio of businesses and led integrated commercial strategies that combined equipment, services, financing, and long-term partnerships. These experiences deepened his understanding of value creation at scale and reinforced the importance of governance, risk management, and long-term perspective—capabilities that would later define his effectiveness in the boardroom.

After exiting GE, Colin made a conscious decision not to pursue another full-time executive role. Instead, he transitioned into board and advisory work, where his accumulated experience could be applied more broadly. Over the past decade, he has served as an independent director and board committee chair across multiple sectors, including maritime, communications, and infrastructure.

Currently, Colin serves in independent board roles with organizations such as AET Tankers, Diligent, and Jason Marine Group, where he focuses on audit, risk, remuneration, and governance matters. Alongside these, he holds senior advisory roles supporting investment and asset management activities in Asia. His earlier board experience includes chairmanships and directorships across listed companies, healthcare organizations, and investment entities—providing him with a wide governance lens across both commercial and public-interest contexts.

Beyond formal board appointments, Colin remains actively engaged in advancing board effectiveness and governance standards. He is a Lifetime Fellow of the Singapore Institute of Directors and an INSEAD-certified International Director, with additional credentials in cybersecurity and climate governance.

In 2025, Colin was appointed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI) to participate in the Board Climate Leadership Program in Geneva, Switzerland. As part of a global cohort of board leaders, the program focuses on equipping directors to integrate climate change and nature-related challenges into corporate and sector-level strategies—particularly in navigating the complexities of the net-zero transition.

Most recently, Colin was appointed as a Member of The Inquiry Panel under the Singapore Legal Profession Act 1966, by the Chief Justice of the Singapore Supreme Court. This role underscores the trust placed in his judgment and integrity, extending his governance contributions beyond corporate boards into the realm of public and professional accountability.

Today, Colin’s work centers on board stewardship—helping organizations think beyond short-term performance, strengthening risk oversight, and guiding leadership teams through uncertainty and transformation. His career illustrates how deep corporate operating experience, when combined with disciplined reflection, can translate into thoughtful and impactful governance at board level.
