Write your own JD

In many of my conversations with professionals and senior executives, I propose to the ones who want to make a change to write their own JD (job descriptions).

In every open position, there is a JD that lists out responsibilities and requirements. The standard approach of jobhunters is to find a job, adapt their CVs, and apply to the job. The job may only fit you 50% but you still apply to it anyway, believing that sending a CV is better than not. This jobhunting approach is similar to buying a lottery.

Instead, consider designing the job that you want to do and that you are competent in doing.

Don’t assume that a CEO, CFO, Sales Manager, or Supply Chain Head is doing the same job. The JDs for the same job title can differ greatly depending on the situation, context, objectives, and team.

The JD writing process forces you to think about what you can bring to the table. It is a proactive approach. Keep it succinct. Put down 5 to 8 things that you can perform proficiently. Add the requirements of the job as well. Be specific and not generic.

If you need help, ChatGPT is available to you. Just put in a few prompts on the job positions that may interest you. Pick, choose, and adapt.

If you have the courage, ask a few persons who know you well professionally to go through the JD. Taking feedback from your trusted circle will help you to enhance the JD.

Of course, there may not be a perfect job that fits 100% to your JD. But you gain awareness of what you can deliver and you will probably be happy doing it.

When your JD is ready, then you start looking for the potential jobs that might fit you.

Also, your JD can guide you well in designing your Elevator Pitch – something that is uniquely yours. Next post!
